DNA solutions - Nature Metrics

eDNA from Water

Our easy-to-use and custom designed sampling kits make biodiversity data easily accessible to any user.

Since 2016, our aquatic eDNA services have been used to survey wildlife in ponds, lakes, rivers and oceans, from the equator to the poles.

We offer a wide range of services, including single-species qPCR tests and metabarcoding analyses to survey whole communities.

Great Crested Newt eDNA

Test for the presence of Great Crested Newts (GCN) in water using NatureMetrics’ GCN eDNA sampling kits, a service that we have been offering with a strong track-record since 2015.

Great Crested Newts are a European Protected Species so surveys are often a legal requirement. NatureMetrics offers one of the most established and trusted GCN eDNA services, and our team has processed thousands of samples for a variety of clients. We’re proud to have scored 100% in the 2021 proficiency test – the fourth year in a row that we have achieved this score.

The NatureMetrics Invertebrate services overcome the classic challenges associated with the taxonomic identification of terrestrial and aquatic invertebrates.

We use DNA-based methods to obtain species-level data across all major taxonomic groups of invertebrate bulk samples collected using standard capture methods. These statistically powerful datasets can provide the evidence needed for demonstrating the effects of environmental or management changes on biodiversity.

Soils and Sediments

A single gram of soil can harbour the hundreds of species of bacteria, fungi and microscopic animals. This little-known world of biodiversity plays a crucial role in supporting healthy ecosystems from forests to farmland. In aquatic sediments, organisms from difficult-to-study biological communities can act as powerful indicators of ecosystems change in response to impact and management. Our analyses unlock this powerful biological data layer, providing insights into soil health and ecosystem quality.

Species from Faeces

The NatureMetrics’ Species from Faeces services allow for species identification of the ‘doer of the deed’ as well as an assessment of the prey species that were consumed.

Citizen Science

The eDNA Discovery Lab brings biodiversity monitoring into the hands of everybody, whether you are looking to engage stakeholders in fieldwork, or are curious about your own local biodiversity. We can help you to reveal the life within ponds, rivers, lakes and oceans. We work with local communities, schools, NGOs, and international charities to empower everybody with the tools needed for global change or local curiosity.

Environmental Policy Consultation & Tender Support

NatureMetrics have assisted clients from a variety of sectors in utilising DNA-based methods to meet environmental monitoring needs across a range of sectors and contexts.

We have good relationships with policy makers and regulators at national and international levels and a strong track record in bringing together multi-stakeholder groups to trial and demonstrate new technologies and help accelerate uptake.

We also offer tender support for environmental projects, providing technical expertise and input as required.

We offer education and training in DNA-based monitoring, having accumulated years of experience in industry and research.

You can enhance your teams’ knowledge of eDNA and DNA methods and develop a more in depth understanding of how to apply these methods robustly to help address particular biodiversity monitoring challenges.

We will tailor training to suit your requirements and deliver over a method of your choosing, be it remotely, on-site, in person or as a blend.

Why NatureMetrics?

Custom designed and validated sampling kits:

Custom designed and validated sampling kits: Our iDNAture sampling kits are highly validated and optimised for use by non-experts in the field. Tried and tested by diverse groups across all continents, our kits require no additional power, equipment or refrigeration, making them the most versatile solution on the market.
