Stakeholder engagement

Natural habitats provide a wide range of ecosystem services, from coastal protection to food production, water purification and carbon sequestration. These are complex systems that have impacts and dependencies on multiple components of biodiversity extending far beyond a single species of plant (or seaweed).

NatureMetrics DNA-based tools are used to assess biodiversity in terrestrial habitats from forests to peatland and coastal systems such as mangroves, seagrass and kelp. Each sampling effort lets us look at nature through multiple lenses – from microbes to megafauna – enabling assessment of overall ecosystem status at the same time as detecting the presence of key species of economic or conservation importance, or those that pose a threat to the habitat.

NatureMetrics - Sectors - Infrastructure

Accounting for biodiversity in NbS programmes can help ensure long-term ecosystem resilience while providing opportunities for participatory monitoring and engagement of local communities and stakeholders.

Our experience

Marine habitats: In 2019, NatureMetrics worked with the IBCCN and local NGO Ocean Revolution Mozambique (ORM) to trial the use of eDNA for helping the communities to better understand the distribution and abundance of fish and to support the Community Fishing Councils in deciding how best to regulate fishing activity within the bay.

Using eDNA to manage biodiversity risk

Read more on the benefits of eDNA survey methods in our briefing note co-authored with The Biodiversity Consultancy

“Thanks to the eDNA service provided by NatureMetrics, ERM has been able to prove the efficacy and health and safety benefits of using eDNA as a survey technique and to highlight its value as a method of rapidly scoping sites without the need for a specialist taxonomist to be present.”
