Janie is a laboratory technician and assists with sample processing and DNA extractions throughout the busy Great Crested Newt (GCN) season.
Janie holds a MSc Conservation and Biodiversity (University of Exeter) and BSc Environmental Science with Professional Placement (University of Birmingham)
During her placement year at Cawthron Institute in New Zealand, Janie gained experience using eDNA to detect marine invasive species. She calculated the rate at which eDNA degrades in the marine water column for two invasive species (Styela clava and Sabella spallanzanii) and finished her dissertation comparing the success of various methods in capturing eDNA from the marine environment. Janie has also worked as an ecological consultant, including GCN sampling, and spent two summers in Cyprus researching and protecting nesting turtles.
