Species from faeces: ID from droppings

Faeces contain DNA of both the host species and its prey, allowing both to be identified. Depending on the context, we apply a variety of analysis methods to faecal samples to make species identifications.

Species ID

We offer targeted species ID tests for bats (identify the species of bat) and otters (confirm identification of otter spraint). In both cases results are returned within 2 weeks of arriving at the lab and the cost is £60 + VAT per sample.

Our bat service is offered in partnership with the Bat Conservation Trust, to whom we donate a fixed percentage of income from every order. As ecologists and conservationists, we are always glad to be able to support and work alongside nature conservation charities and NGOs, and to give something back to nature.

Diet assessment

We have carried out diet assessment on faecal samples from bats (featured in this blog post) and fish-eating birds and mammals, including otters. The analysis typically takes 4-8 weeks. Get in touch if you are interested in learning more.
