The 1000 rivers project is a combined effort to sample 1000 of the rivers that feed into the North Atlantic Ocean. Capturing knowledge on such a large geographical scale involves many partners. Our very own Dr Kat Bruce and Dr Juliet Jones are the coordinators for the South of England, and NatureMetrics are supplying the sampling kits for use in England and Norway.

NatureMetrics have already received samples from across Europe. In total, the 1000 rivers project has achieved 15 % of their target, with over 151 samples collected from rivers in the UK, France, Norway, Canada, Iceland and Sweden.

For the samples that are being processed by NatureMetrics, the list of fishes being detected is ever-growing and we’ll be updating you on the first results soon. We can already confirm that the NatureMetrics eDNA methods have detected the critically endangered European Eel (Anguilla anguilla), and some species that you might be familiar with such as the native Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and the Brown trout (Salmo trutta).

Have you notice any areas near you that could be sampled more, or can you see any gaps that you’re interested in sponsoring or completing yourself? Any river is eligible, big or small, and you can collect water at any time of the year. You can explore the sampling locations on the interactive map below.

Our kits are easy to use, and anybody can learn how to collect and send eDNA samples with NatureMetrics. If you’d like to get involved in this project, you can sponsor a river or coordinate your eDNA sampling sites with ours so that we can cover a wider geographical area. Don’t hesitate to get in touch with your regional coordinators, and we can keep moving towards our bigger target. You can also keep up to date with the project by visiting the 1000 rivers website.
